Encrypting Data at Rest
Encryption of Data at Rest (Restricted Data) using Windows EFS
- Restricted data must be kept secured from outside sources and one way to accomplish security on restricted data is to use Windows EFS system. This system provides encryption on folders so when you store files that have restricted data it remains secure from prying eyes using a strong encryption algorithm. The following provides a "how to" for creation of a secure (encrypted) folder to store data that requires protection.

Hard Drive Data Removal
- Removing restricted data from the hard drive takes just a little bit more than dragging the data folder to the recycley bin. This type of deletion simply removes the label for the data location off the tables. The data is still there on the hard drive, in memory, and in the cache. You will need to take additional steps to remove any restricted data so it is not retrievable.

Wireless
WiFi (Wireless)Security
- How vulnerable is an unprotected wireless network? Well, open the window and yell. Anyone who hears your voice could access an unprotected network with little more than a wireless adapter and a laptop. Wireless network security - or lack thereof - is a serious issue.

AirBears
- Airbears is the wireless network installed in the Banway building along with the high speed wired network. The "access point" is located outside the conference room high up on the wall. This access point allows usesrs with wireless access capabilities to connect to the campus network.

Laptop Computer Security
Secure Laptops
- When most people think about travel security, they concentrate on their wallets or purses, but having a laptop stolen or lost can be much more damaging. Putting personal data at risk is bad enough, but so many of us use laptops, these computers tend to contain data that can cause a lot of damage if it falls into the wrong hands not to mention the lost dollars in the cost of the computer.

New Computer Security
Steps to take before connecting a new computer to the Internet
- What should be accomplished prior to connecting a new computer to the network/Internet is as an important security measure as any other maybe more. According to research a computer can be infected with malicious software within 12 minutes of connecting to the Internet. Once infected it can be almost impossible to get the computer clean again with out doing a complete re-install of the operating system.
