IM (Instant Messaging)
Another danger to workstations is the use of IM or Instant Messaging Services/Software. Some of the dangers:
Sends and receives file attachments (worms, viruses, etc)
Mass mailers use to distribute themselves to all members of your buddy list.
Ripe medium for on-line scams, identity theft, and other predatory behavior.
SPIM is spam sent over IM containing offensive language or links to web sites, etc.
Until IM becomes a more secure medium, the best protection is your own education and watchfulness. The following security tips go a long way toward making IM more safe.

- Keep your IM software up to date.
- Keep your operating system and security software up to date.
- Don’t send credit card numbers, Social Security Numbers, or any other vital information over IM.
- Don’t open attachments or click on Web links sent by someone you don’t know.
- Even if you know who sent a Web link, hover over the link with your cursor before clicking it to check whether the Web address seems legitimate.
- Don’t send files over IM unless you have no other alternative, and never send files containing information you want to keep private.
- Be wary of odd behavior. If a person on your allowed list is sending strange messages, terminate your IM session and contact them over the phone or on email.
- Protect your computer and data with an anti-virus program.
- Install a good firewall. Some provide additional protection for IM services such as Norton and ZoneAlarm.
Take advantage of third-party encryption and authentication tools—but only if they’ve received solid reviews.
Instant messaging is the communication tool of the moment, and it looks as though it’s only going to get more popular. IM programs are now available for handheld's and cell phones and their feature lists keep growing. As you join the ranks of IM users, take its risks seriously.
