Recommended Security Settings - Updates

It is highly recommended that the following security settings be set on SIS workstations. This is particular to the Windows XP Professional operating system. In regards to the Windows 2000 Professional systems the same basic settings for "Notify me but do not download and install" option is highly recommended.

Click the "START" button on the start bar, select "SETTINGS", and then "CONTROL PANEL":
select start, settings, and control panel graphic

Select "SECURITY CENTER" icon:

Once the Windows Security Center is opened, select the "Automatic Updates" link:

Make sure you have selected the radio button for "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" option.

When this selection is active you will receive notification in your system tray (located to the right side of the START bar of your desktop):

There will be a small shield displayed in the system tray indicating you have updates to install for your operating system (shield with ! at left side):

This will be there along with the balloon text to tell you updates are ready. Click the icon shield and the following will appear:

Go through the list and make sure there are no updates you wish NOT to install. If there are uncheck the check box (like I show the malicious software removal tool) and then click the "DOWNLOAD" button. The updates will be downloaded and installed in the background. The shield will disappear when the task is completed.

I will provide a list via email of those updates you should not install until further testing is completed.
