Early this month, over thirty staff from the SIS project’s technical and functional teams participated in “Code Fest,” a two-day event designed to create a focused, meeting-free environment for advancing Go-Live 3 development and beginning work on Go-Live 4 projects. The event was an experiment to measure the kind of impact this environment would have on productivity, and the results were evident.

The SIS project has assembled a diverse team of UC Berkeley, technology, and higher education experts to design and implement Berkeley’s new Student Information Systems (SIS). Our intention from the beginning of the project has been to draw upon the expertise of our students to help us design the new SIS. In addition to engaging the larger student population, roughly 10% of our SIS staff are students. These students contribute hundreds of hours each month to the project.

On August 10, the SIS (Student Information Systems) Project held an all-day Academic Advising Retreat. More than 70 colleagues attended representing curricular and co-curricular units at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Participants engaged in discussions about user experience, academic planning, advising tools, and enrollment.

Students and staff shared their experiences with academic planning and ideas for making the process better. April 9th the SIS Project hosted a Design Workshop on the topic of Funding and Paying for my Education. The session engaged 21 students, SIS Project Staff, plus Financial Aid, Billing and Cal Student Central staff, in a 3 hour set of exercises.

In support of the One IT initiative, the SIS Project recently hosted IT partners from across campus for a festive afternoon of fellowship, education, live music, and light refreshments. An estimated 250 attendees toured the SIS Project office and learned more about the project timeline, integration plans, user experience, and infrastructure architecture.
